QUITTING

Except perhaps related to relationships, quitting is the easiest thing in the world.

Giving up is far easier than persevering through all the obstacles that life places in front of us. Those hurdles are both known and unforeseen and often they are formidable, without easy and clear fixes to them.

I said quitting was only hard with regards to personal relationships, but clearly there are many other scenarios in which quitting is difficult. Most involve things that are bad for you. Drugs, alcohol, smoking and any other type of addictive elements are usually very hard to quit. From those addictions that carry mostly physiological effects to those that may be more psychological such as eating disorders, it is of course one of life’s greatest ironies that while quitting is easy to do toward achieving anything positive in our lives, the negative, are the complete opposite.

Now is there a time to stop, or give up what you are doing because the plan is flawed and needs re-adjustment, yes, but that is not quitting that is strategic planning as long as you resume an amended plan of action within a reasonable amount of time. Quitting would be to just give up with no alternative plan or action.

Quitting is so easy, because generally the (positive) things we want in life are usually the most difficult to achieve. Whether it is career or monetarily motivated, time and hard work are only a few of the factors that are needed to achieve success. Success, while a subjective standard, does not come with a catalog or guideline for achievement. What we do know is that life’s pursuit of success comes with many obstacles to that path.

Statistically speaking, most of us are not destined to achieve the top level of our chosen profession or dream scenario. Most actors do not become Will Smith or Tom Cruise. In reality most actors do not make their primary living from acting. The vast majority of athletes from high school and college will not make the Olympics or make a living from their chosen sports. Most kids do not go on to become professionals with MBA, JD’s or Doctorates. Most people that seek wealth fall well short of being placed in that 1% of earners. Again it is all relative and subjective, but because the odds are against you is no reason to give up your dreams or aspirations.

Giving up is too easy and the only definitive that comes from quitting is that you will not achieve your goals or success. The only thing easier than quitting is to simply never try.

Trust me, as someone who has chosen to take the unconventional path, I understand how easy it is to give up. I have only ever worked for myself full-time, and my road to success and stability has only ever been mercurial. While I look at the positive, I am not delusional to recognize the difficulties that my path has placed on both myself and those close to me.

Yet, I still believe in the dream and understand that while the road there has had to be continually tweaked, my perseverance and faith in myself could waiver, but I was in control to make sure it was never extinguished.

I have been asked many times, when things were not exactly going according to plan, why I did not abandon my dreams or entrepreneurial ways. My answer has always been the same. I believe in myself. I have realized that I have made mistakes and have not always had the correct answers, but as long as my body and mind were capable I was never going to give up on myself.

No one else is ever going to truly believe in you, if you do not have that strength of conviction and belief in yourself. Perseverance is not easy, but it is the most common trait of those that eventually achieve success.
