HUSTLE HARD BUT HUSTLE SMART

Everybody’s a “Hustler”. Everyday they are hustlin. Hustling is glorified in every other rap/trap song and if you have these guys tell it they all pushed more pies than Dominos and flipped more birds than Trump supporters saluting Mexican immigrants.

“Hustling” is probably most associated with illegal, outlaw or black market activities. America, if not much of society, loves an outlaw. More people can give you biographical information about fictitious gangsters Tony Montana and Michael Corleone, than would be capable of naming three members of the present United States Supreme Court. Crime may not pay… but it sure holds our interest a lot further than law and order.

Hustling represents counter-culture. Hustlers are people that do not have to work nine to fives and conceivably are unapologetic in their life-choices. “Hustling”, of course does not have to encompass any type of criminal activity. It can be just about working hard. Hustling can denote thinking out of the box and applying ingenuity to making something from little. Hustling is in part the idea of not being dependent on others for your livelihood, instead making it on your own or at least outside of any corporate structure.

Hustling may be all of these things, but as anyone who has ever identified themselves as a “Hustler” can tell you, despite any glamorization, there is nothing easy about hustling. Hustlers are noted for their persistence and perseverance. There is no formal education or handbooks that come with hustling. Most people are learning from trial and error. If you are hustling as an outlaw, mistakes cannot only be costly financially, but also potential threats to ones safety and freedom.

That’s why it is important, regardless of your hustle, to not only put in the time but be smart about it. I do not judge, and I would be hypocritical to denounce anyone for choices that they make for their hustle. But, I would also be remiss to not point out the shortsightedness of illegal hustles. There are no legends in the “Game” that did not suffer serious losses. Either their health, or those of their loved ones, financial loss or long prison stretches are the overwhelming rule to those that chose outlaw lifestyles. I am not preaching, it is just an unfortunate fact. You get big enough to live that fabulous life, inevitably it will attract the attention of the feds who in turn have the resources and time to outlast anything you are doing.

If your hustle does not involve illegalities it is still tantamount to learn how to not only work hard but smart. Hustling hard is admirable. Putting in the time and work is never bad, but ‘Hustlers’ have to learn how to maximize the time and resources, because so many can attest that putting in the time alone, without a smart and clear path may be the most inefficient means of making a living, now matter how hard in the paint you go.

An irony is that we think of “Hustlers” outside the conforms of mainstream society, but the reality is that while they may have made choices outside the beaten path, they still need to eventually conform to may of the “square” business principles and ideologies that make doing business most practical and economical.

No matter what you identify yourself as, hustling hard is always trumped by being smart, disciplined and resourceful to maximize whatever business opportunities you are able to create.
