So the new appointed US Attorney General has just been caught lying under oath during his confirmation hearings… and you expect me to ever tell anyone in “authority” the truth…ever… yeah…ok
The Attorney General of the United States is the head of the country’s Department Of Justice (DOJ). In effect he is the head law enforcement director in the nation, responsible for all cases that the government brings forth to the US Supreme Court and as per DOJ website: “To enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law; to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic; to provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime; to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior; and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.”
So, when the Attorney General of the US is essentially caught lying under oath, prior to being confirmed in the actual position, what faith are we supposed to have in any concept of “Truth and Justice.” More importantly what example are we setting for younger generations as far as any sanctity of government or political office when the President and the top members of his administration seem to be allowed to lie with impunity.
Impunity because who investigates the president and his administration for any wrongdoing, when with just slightly more than 30 days into the job the highest law enforcement officer, who is an actual appointee of that president, has been found to have lied under oath. The fact that Sessions, in a recent press conference has refused to admit he lied, only further provides proof that we are in the midst of a moral quandary in the US. Ironically, this is all taking place while the conservative, “moral” party is in nearly complete political control.
Sessions’ dishonest statement that he answered the question as he understood it is not just semantics but legal speak for lying through vague denial… a lawyer’s version of “alternative facts.” It is hard to be the moral police for the world when lies, or at the very least consistent mistruths, dominate the headlines from the country’s top politician and his administration. The only attempts at accountability are attacking the messengers decrying their transgressions, instead of any ownership.
Forget the rest of the world, what is the example that this generation of politicians, law enforcement and people in power are setting for this younger generation? In paraphrasing a quote, ‘kids may not always listen to the words adults say, but they will always follow their examples.’
We have a younger generation being taught zero accountability. They are being taught to lack empathy and understanding. They are being taught that if they believe they are right, any ends apparently justify the means. They are being taught to lie, and when caught double down and not only deny but attack the accuser. They are being taught that if you have the power and control, you set the rules. Many of us have always thought that in principal, but never has it been more boldly transparent that having power not only means never not having to say sorry, but no matter how wrong the transgression, you will be shielded from any real accountability for your actions.
These are interesting, if not tumultuous times we live in. Our overall opinions of our political leaders may not be particularly high, but no matter what side of the political fence you sit, people can generally live with differing ideology, when implemented with a degree of principal and dignity. Our politicians, on both sides, need to really be more aware of the images that they are promulgating and the impact it is having on how the world sees us as well as a younger domestic generation. Specially when these images and actions will potentially have more far reaching and longer impact than the political terms and policies they are recklessly fighting to implement.
