MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND-UNOFFICIAL START OF SUMMER

I know the official start of summer isn’t until June 21st, but everyone in the United States knows that Memorial Day Weekend is the real, if not unofficial, start of summer. The North and Midwest have thawed out by now with their harsh winters a distant memories at least for the next three months.

So we celebrate summer with BBQ’s and trips to the beach and a 3 day weekend with most sneaking out early on Friday if possible as well. People begin the celebrations of their “summer of me”. Time to reveal those beach bodies that you were working on for a few months, and even if the beach bod isn’t where it needs to be you can always camouflage it with a tan.

Memorial Day is a time to wear less and smile more. The doldrums of cold weather and dreary days are gone. Al Fresco dining and longer days make even going to work more tolerable since it’s no longer enveloped by darkness on the morning as well as evening commute. What better way to celebrate the summer then a kickoff weekend and Memorial Day supplies the excuses we all want.

Now of course, Memorial Day is actually a holiday to celebrate honor, observe and remember the countless and important sacrifices that so many veterans and others have made with their lives to protect and serve this country.

Miami Beach has added an air show this year, in part to celebrate the patriotic intone of the holiday and in part to change the demographic landscape of those that descend on the city for the last several years with the unofficial Urban Beach Weekend. These patriots and veterans need to be remembered and celebrated, but let’s face it Americans love any reason to Barbecue and have an extended weekend, specially when coupled with warm weather.

Let us remember, celebrate and honor those that have dedicated their lives to protect and serve. and be safe as you head to the beach… after all its only the beginning of  summer.
