Most of us generally have no problems in voicing our gripes. Our loved ones, and even casual acquaintances are often the sounding boards, voluntarily or not to our diatribes. It is good to voice that displeasure. Internalized anger and frustration is bad on our mental and physical being. Pent up frustration and anger will eventually find a release mechanism and the news is filled with stories of people acting upon those emotions.
So you tell them why you are mad…but do you spend an equal amount of time telling them why you are glad? Has negativity overrun your life? I am not suggesting you become the caricature of eternal optimism that we all find so annoying, but I am suggesting that we allow positivity in our lives and just as importantly share it with others.
You never know who you may affect by your positivity. Kinds words and optimism, if genuine, are never wasted. We are inundated with so much negativity in the news and internet and this presidential election cycle definitely does not help. Images of terrorism, racism, political unrest, police brutality and poverty are just the first half hour of a newscast. These items must be captured and reported, because we cannot turn a blind eye to the injustices and inequalities within our world.
However, we can add to the narrative. One person at a time. Things are not always and will never always be perfect, but there is good in the world, and hopefully more specifically in your individual world. Share those blessings with others. I am not suggesting preaching or bragging, rather words to express appreciation for all that you have instead of focusing, as so many of us do, on what we do not have.
Life is about perspective and balance. Even in the hardest of times, it is important to garner some perspective as to how blessed you really are. Find a hard time with that rationale? Imagine being born a child in India or Africa. Extreme I know but that’s some perspective for your ass.
So don’t stop telling them why you mad. Just for some balance make sure you are also sharing why you are glad. The exercise may help others, but most importantly the balance and perspective may do wonders for you.
