HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

By Richard Ray:

My aversions to manufactured holidays are quite documented (it is estimated that US shoppers will spend nearly $23 Billion dollars for Mothers Day, surpassed only by Christmas and Hanukkah), but how can I not make an exception for any day that celebrates women and more specifically all the mother’s out there.

Happy Mother’s day to all the women, young and old, that have ever been called a mother, through biology or otherwise. To those that cannot be physically near their mothers today, because of distance or death, the day is just a great reminder to reflect on how much these incredible women mean (have meant) in our lives.

Jewelry, brunch and flowers are gestures. Nice ones I’m sure, but if we have the opportunity let’s make sure we tell and show our moms how much we love and appreciate them. Our mothers should feel loved and appreciated everyday, but it is okay if this day exemplifies the point. Let’s give an extra special shout out to the single moms, who may have been forced to carry a heavier burden.

Much respect and love to all the moms out there. Your jobs, in raising us… often heading our households… teaching us compassion and empathy… teaching us strength… showing us how to love… You are appreciated… and today you are celebrated.

An extended note to men… Let Mother’s Day serve as a reminder… a reminder that the love, respect and admiration that we have for our mother’s needs to be better reflected in how we interact and treat all women on a daily basis. You cannot claim to love and respect your mother, and then show anything less than reverence in your daily dealings with all women. The reality is that men can do more… we can do better… to show all women that same respect we claim to feel for our mothers… What could make your mother more proud than that?
